Report on IKS Field Trip

2025-02-14

As a part of Indian Knowledge System (NEP2020) a field trip to Eco Govardhan Village was organized by the Department of Humanities and Applied Science  to provide students with a practical understanding of sustainable development and eco-friendly practices. The visit offered valuable insights into environmental conservation, self-sustaining communities, and traditional practices that align with modern ecological needs. The aim was to make students understand the relevance of Indian Knowledge systems in contemporary context, including their role in shaping social values, ethics, and sustainable practices.

Sustainability Practices Observed

1. Waste Management

Eco Govardhan Village follows a comprehensive waste management system that includes segregation of organic and non-organic waste, composting, and recycling. Organic waste is converted into compost and used for organic farming, while non-organic waste is processed and repurposed to minimize landfill contributions.

2. Rainwater Harvesting

The village effectively utilizes rainwater harvesting techniques to conserve water resources. Large storage tanks and natural filtration systems ensure that rainwater is collected, purified, and utilized for irrigation, drinking, and household purposes. This practice significantly reduces dependency on external water sources.

3. Solar Electricity Panels

A key highlight of the visit was the use of solar electricity panels that power the village. The solar grid supports various facilities, including lighting, water pumps, and kitchen appliances. This sustainable energy source reduces carbon footprints and promotes renewable energy usage.

4. Goshala (Cow Shelter)

The village maintains a goshala that houses and nurtures cows, recognizing their significance in traditional Indian agriculture. Cow dung is used for bio-gas production and as an organic fertilizer, promoting sustainable farming. The students learned about the role of indigenous cattle in maintaining ecological balance.

5. Empowering Women with Skills

Eco Govardhan Village runs various skill development programs aimed at empowering women. Local women are trained in handicrafts, organic farming, and sustainable livelihood practices. These initiatives not only provide financial independence but also encourage eco-friendly entrepreneurship.

Spiritual Practices Observed

1. Bhajan (Devotional Singing)

The students and teachers participated in bhajan sessions, experiencing the peaceful and uplifting atmosphere created by devotional singing. This practice fosters a sense of unity and spiritual well-being.

2. Yoga

A guided yoga session was conducted, focusing on physical and mental well-being. The students learned different asanas and breathing techniques that help in reducing stress and improving overall health.

3. Meditation

The visit included a meditation session where students and teachers practiced mindfulness and deep relaxation techniques. This experience highlighted the importance of inner peace and self-awareness in maintaining a balanced life.

Conclusion

The field trip to Eco Govardhan Village was an enlightening experience for both students and teachers. It emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability into daily life and showcased innovative methods for environmental conservation. Additionally, the spiritual practices offered a holistic approach to well-being, reinforcing mental and emotional health. The visit left a lasting impression on students, inspiring them to adopt and promote sustainable and spiritual practices in their own communities.

Recommendations

·         Project on rainwater harvesting in college premises.

·         Project on waste segregation and composting

·         Project on   renewable energy and sustainability initiatives

·         Project on yoga and meditation to promote mental well-being.

.

This visit to Eco Govardhan Village successfully reinforced the concept of ecological responsibility, sustainability, and spiritual harmony among students, contributing to their holistic education.
